Assunto: 30 anos do .br

The ".br" domain completes 30 years this Thursday, 18. During these three decades, the ".br", operated by the Information and Coordination Center of Ponto BR (NIC.br), was established as one of the "top country code domains" (ccTLD or country-code Top Level Domain ) most successful in the world. There are more than 4 million names registered, covering the most varied initiatives connected to the Internet in Brazil.

".Br" was present in Brazil even before the Internet connection was established in the country. On April 18 1989, Jon Postel (IANA), responsible for assigning top-level domains, delegated ".br" to the group that operated academic networks at the time at FAPESP. Initially the ".br" was used to identify machines in the academic environment, and the records were few and manual.

In 1991, with Internet access already established in Brazil, a structure of names under the ".br" was created contemplating the subdomains "gov.br", "com.br", "net.br", "org.br "And" mil.br "- respectively intended for Government, companies, non-profit organizations and armed forces.

From the expansion of the Internet in the commercial area at the end of 1994, the ".br" started to grow rapidly: 851 domains registered in 1995, reached more than 7.500 names in the month of December 1996. The process became automated, and the 1 mark of one million domains was reached in 2006 ten years later.

Evolution

The 4 million registered names put the Brazilian domain among the largest in the world. Of the around 300 country domains that exist (ccTLDs), the ".br" is the most popular 7. In its evolution, the ".br" retained its specific characteristics, such as the preservation of the semantics of the categories of names.

Thus, with the creation of new subdomains, it now has more than 120 options. There are categories for specific interests (such as "ong.br", "art.br", "eco.br"), for liberal professionals ("bio.br", "adm.br", "mus.br", "med .br "," eng.br ", among others) that identify cities (for example," rio.br "," manaus.br "," cuiaba.br "," floripa.br "," foz.br " ), among others. In Brazil, 92% of companies that own a website use the ".br" domain, according to CGI.br's TIC Empresas 2017 survey carried out by the Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br) of NIC.br.

In addition to the variety of options with the most 120 subdomains available, the 30 years of experience have shown technical and operational soundness. ".Br" differs from other domains, initially because it is restricted to individuals and companies in the country, and also to adopt security features such as two-way authentication (token), secure DNS resolution and encryption (DNSSEC).

The resilience is increased with the numerous copies of servers that it owns in Brazil, besides maintaining servers strategically distributed by the world (United States, Europe and Asia). The value practiced by the registry, besides being among the lowest internationally, remains stable for long periods.
