Brasiliana USP Digital Library's Principles

Brasiliana USP - 05/04/2012 - [ gif ]
Assunto: Internet

Brasiliana USP has been commited from its conception with the ideals of open access, as expressed in the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities (2003) and in the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). Such principles are in accordance with the 15 topics of the Memorandum resulting from the reunions promoted by the Brazilian Internet Committee (Comitê Gestor da Internet no Brasil, CGI.br), between July 5th and August 2nd, 2007, an initiative aimed at defining guidelines for public policies in the support of digital content production.

In April 2010, the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, in association with Brasiliana USP and the Casa de Cultura Digital (Digital Culture House), promoted the International Symposium of Public Policies for Digital Collections (Simpósio Internacional de Políticas Públicas para Acervos Digitais, SIPPAD, São Paulo), in which world renown researchers and professionals exchanged experiences, concepts and solutions with a view to proposing public policies for the digitalization of repositories, as well as formulating a sustainable model for preserving and ensuring and public access to Brazilian cultural heritage. As established in the I SIPPAD's Letter of Intent, "the digitalization of cultural heritage repositories in Brazil has become an urgent task, which calls for a reflection upon the limits imposed by current copyright laws, and upon the new technologies, standards and normalizations, as well as upon solutions towards the creation of an effective network of existing projects and institutions".

In this spirit, we have actively taken part in the process which resulted in the creation of the Rede Memorial (Memorial Network), September 14th 2001, at the city of Recife. The Memorial was conceived as a national network of institutions committed to policies for the digitalization of cultural heritage archives in Brazil. The 31 institutions present at the Recife Forum subscribed a letter of principles, the Carta do Recife, which may be accessed through the Memorial Network site at www.redememorial.org.br
