VERSÃO EM PORTUGUÊSVERSIÓN EN ESPAÑOL

The publication will be launched during the event LACNIC 27, in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, Brazil

Internationally regarded as a successful case study, the fight against spam in Brazil by the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br) has been documented in a book, and its English and Spanish versions are to be released on May 22nd. The opening distribution of the new versions will take place in Foz do Iguaçu during LACNIC 27 – a meeting conducted by The Internet Addresses Registry for Latin America and the Caribbean (LACNIC), and co-organized by CGI.br and The Brazilian Network Information Center (NIC.br), which will receive hundreds of attendees from over 30 countries.

The book “Fighting Internet spam in Brazil: Historical overview and reflections on combating spam and managing port 25, coordinated by the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee” describes how the country, once referred to as "the king of spam", managed to become an international example of cooperation among stakeholders to solve issues concerning the misuse of the Internet infrastructure. Besides featuring a brief report about the Port 25 Management Program implementation, the book accounts of its main players’ experience.

"Sharing experiences and case studies is crucial to fighting spam, something that has been in the agenda of many forums on Internet governance and regulation in the past fifteen years. The English and Spanish versions of this book will not only provide our work with a greater visibility, but also inspire other countries,” Henrique Faulhaber points out. Faulhaber, who is a CGI.br board member, organized the book in collaboration with Cristine Hoepers and Klaus Steding-Jessen, of the Computer Emergence Response Team Brazil (CERT.br), a center for studies on handling computer security incidents in the country.

The book and its translations are part of a series of CGI.br publications and are available for download at http://cgi.br/publicacoes/indice/livros/ under a Creative Commons license, which allows unrestrictive sharing, reproduction, distribution, and adaptation, given that attribution to the authors is provided. Universities, libraries, and research centers interested in receiving printed copies of the publications should send a request by email to assessoria@cgi.br.

CGI.br Book Series

CGI.br continues to promote the debate about Internet use and governance through a series of publications called CGI.br Book Series, which provide researchers, government managers, entrepreneurs, activists, students, and the general public with vital documents and studies on the subject.

In addition to “Fighting Internet Spam in Brazil”, the series includes a book with the Portuguese version of the documents elaborated during the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), and another with the “NETmundial Multistakeholder Statement” provided in seven languages. All books are available at http://www.cgi.br/publicacoes/indice/livros/.
